Being a Frugal Housewife

Someone emailed me the other day if being a frugal housewife only applied to “taking care of our family’s money.” I had to stop for a minute and think about it. My first response was going to be “Of course, being frugal with our money is what it’s all about.” But then, it occurred to me that no being frugal does not only apply to “taking care of our money.” The Proverbs 31 woman came to mind.

If you are not familiar with the Proverbs 31 woman, take the time to read Proverbs 31. The Proverbs 31 woman is the ultimate in being frugal. She is someone that all who are practicing frugality should strive to be like.

The Proverbs 31 Woman was an excellent housewife and business person.

She was always looking for gain for her family. Her husband trusted her with everything. She worked with her hands. She looked for wool and flax for clothing for her family. She wasn’t afraid to put her hands to the spindle and work. She made linen garments and sold them in the marketplace.
She brought her food in from afar. She is compared to a merchant ship that brings in goods from afar.
She worked long hours. She rose early in the morning to prepare food for her family and her household staff. She considered that gain was good. Her lamp did not go out at night.
She was an excellent employer. She took care of her staff.
She was a business person. She considered land and bought it. From her earnings, she planted vineyards.
She wasn’t afraid of the cold weather. She knew that she had provided her family with the proper clothing.
She didn’t do anything that would make her husband ashamed in the community. He was well known and she was well known. She was kind to others, she did not idly speak about others or her husband.
She was wise.
Her children saw her accomplishments and praised her.

I’m sure that I’ve left out many points about the Proverbs 31 woman.

To me, it makes sense to strive to be like the Proverbs 31 woman. All of those points go back to being frugal. It’s something that I definitely want to strive to become in my quest to being frugal.
