What’s in the Freezer?
This past week, my husband and I started taking an inventory of what we had in our big freezer. We couldn’t tell what some of it was. There was a lot of freezer burn and a lot of frost and ice in the freezer. We realized that we had let a lot of food ruin and in the process lost money.
Now I know, some may be asking how could you not know about what was going on in the freezer. We are not avid freezer users. We mainly buy enough groceries to use for the week. But after researching for a post, I discovered that bulk buying was a money saving idea.
After carefully checking the freezer, my husband decided that the gasket (hope I spelled that right) was bad and needed to be replaced. It also needs to be defrosted (it’s not a frost-free freezer or self defrosting).
So after we get the freezer cleaned out and fixed, here are some tips that we are going to use when we start stocking it up again.
- We are going to take all meat out of their store packages and repackage them. We have a hand-held vacuum pack sealer that we are going to use in vacuum packing the food for easy storage.
- We are going to label each package with the name of what’s in the package, the date it was bought and the date it was frozen.
- We are going to make sure and move all older frozen food to the top, placing the newer food on the bottom.
- We are going to defrost the freeze more often.
If you have any other tips for freezing food, we would love to hear them.
Till next time,
JTLocke
