Thanksgiving Memories

One of my favorite Thanksgiving memories is that of Thanksgiving at my parents house.

Back in the day, Thanksgiving was an all day event. There were always 20 – 30 people that would show up throughout the day. Of course, we’d have a set eating time where we always had a huge turkey, a large ham, and a large roast for those who did not like turkey or ham. Mom would cook all the fixings — dressing, giblet gravy, green beans, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and corn. She’d make all kinds of salads — orange salad, cranberry salad, pistachio salad, and even a green leaf salad. My oldest sister would cook casseroles. Oh how I loved those asparagus casseroles!!! My middle sister was in charge of dessert. There were always chocolate pies, pecan pies, sweet potato pies, pumpkin pies, chess pie cakes, and coconut cakes. My favorite was always the chocolate pies!!! I was still living at home and was in charge of getting the table set and putting out the assortment of rolls and bread that mom and dad had either made or bought. There was always a refrigerator full of tea and all kinds of soft drinks.

After the main meal, everyone would break off and go watch football in the den or go to the familyroom/play room where the canasta tables were set up. If we ran out of tables, then you might find a group at the kitchen table or the dining room table. There might even be pinochle or dominoes being played at one of the tables. And of course, during the card games, if anyone got hungry again, they’d stop playing long enough to go and fix another plate and eat or go grab something off the finger food trays — we’d always have sausage balls, homemade cheese balls, vegetable trays, cookies, and cake squares. The house was always full of laughter and friendly heckling till late Thanksgiving night. Those were the days!!!

What are some of your favorite Thanksgiving memories? We’d love for you to share some of your favorite memories with us in the comments section.
