Frugal Tip Saturday — What to do Empty Plastic Jugs?
Do you buy a lot of milk or orange juice? If so, you probably have a lot of plastic milk jugs to throw away by the end of the week. Did you know that plastic milk jugs have an extra life or two in them before going in the trash or recycling bin?
Milk or orange juice jugs have at least one, maybe even a couple of extra lives in them. Of course, I would suggest washing them thoroughly with warm water and maybe a little bit of bleach so that you don’t get that soured milk or orange juice smell.
These are some uses. You’ll need to cut off the top but not the handle .
- This one is good if you don’t have a garbage disposal. Keep it near the sink and use it while peeling potatoes. Simply hold the potatoes over the empty milk jug and let the peelings drop into the jug. You then have a convenient way to carry it to the trash or to the compost pile!
- Use the milk jug as a tool caddy.
- I keep one handy to put the coffee grounds and filter in after making a pot of coffee. It can then go in the trash after a few uses or if I don’t have an empty one to take its place, then it gets emptied and rewashed and used again!!!

Now here’s a real money saving idea!!! Put your loose change in a plastic jug. When you get ready to take it to be counted, you’ll already have it in a container that’s easy to carry!!!
What are some ways that you reuse old empty milk jugs? We’d love to hear from you. Leave us a comment and let us know!!!

I cut off just the bottom, take the cap off, and use them over new seedlings in the garden on cool nights.
I slice it in half diagonally and use it as a rice or bird seed scooper.
Thanks for all the great ideas! I love the money saving one and goodness knows I go through lots of milk jugs!
I rip off the tabs of my diet coke cans and put them in the empty milk jugs. Once I fill one up, I give it to a friend to recycle.
Any time that I get an empty jug. That I put tabs in the jug or what ever the case may be.The empty jug or containers comes pretty handy.
