That's a fantastic suggestion. I often tried to save money by freezing meals, but this is really an excellent method. I'll have to hit the shops and get some jars!

I do wonder if canning is cost effective if you have to buy produce rather than grow your own.

Here's a web site that my local extension office shared at a food preservation program last week: http://www.uga.edu/nchfp/ It's the National Center for Home Food Preservation.

To me, the cost effectiveness would depend on whether someone wanted to take the time to plant a garden and put the time into taking care of it or whether it was just better for them to purchase from a Farmer's Market. I wouldn't purchase from a grocery store because their prices tend to be higher than those of the farmer's prices.

My neighbor's planted a garden, tended it, and then started neglecting it. It's produced but not to the extent that it could have. To me that has been a bit of a waste of their time.

Also, if you have kind neighbors who share their overage of produce then the cost effectiveness is clear. It is only the time and money that you have put into the canning process.
