Often when I’m doing research for articles I’ll search news stories, hot blog topics, and forums to get a handle on what is the “HOT” topic of the day. Today was no different.  Article after article started showing up on the topic “Frugal Parents Toss Disposable Training Pants.”  The Associated Press ran a story about it and then CBS News and The New York Times picked it up and carried the same story, not to mention a lot of other news stations and newspapers.  So I thought it must be a big story, so why not…let’s talk “disposable training pants.”

Disposable training pants were introduced to the world some twenty years ago. They make life during potty training easy.  I could put a pair on my son and if he didn’t make it to the potty in time, no problem he had his training pants on.  Problem was he was way too comfortable in them and he didn’t think he had to make it to the potty in time.  So it took longer for him to be potty trained than it did with my daughter.  We didn’t use them with her.

So if the disposable training pants are so convenient and easy to use, why are frugal parents tossing them? The expense.  According to the article, frugal parents have found out that it is one area that they can cut an expense that is not needed and it is turning out that their kids are becoming potty trained much quicker.  They are trading saving $30 to $100 a month for the occasional accidents that might be had during potty training.  Sounds like a very good frugal idea!!!   Some parents are still using them at night for those accidents that might happen while their kids are sleeping and I think that that also is a very good idea.

Wonder what other disposable products could be cut from the budget? Any ideas?  Leave us a comment.  We’d love to hear from you.

Till next time,

  1. I agree that using the disposable training pants gives the lil ones permission to just skip the potty… I’ve found this to be the case with my own lil one. So the only time we use them is if we are going someplace that getting to a potty might be an issue and at bedtime. During the day she wears her big girl panties and is much more likely to use the potty. Of course some days she just doesn’t care anyway… but that just means more clothes to wash… and that is less expensive than buying disposables.
