Grocery Store Manners

Has this ever happened to you?

You are in the grocery store. You’ve picked a time to go when you know it is not going to be real busy and you really want to take your time, comparison shop, and use your coupons. Everything is going great until you get to the cereal aisle. There’s a lot of cereal and you really want to read the labels. This is one time that you are on a roll and actually getting into grocery shopping. Then it happens — some grumpy person wants something from the spot where you are. You smile and let them go ahead in front of you.

Do they say thank you? NO!!! As they are walking off, you hear them complaining because they’ve seen you taking your time, reading the labels, and looking at your coupons. They may even say something rude to you personally. It’s very hard when that happens to hold your tongue and not say something back. One thing I’ve learned — you are the better person when you don’t say anything back. It’s been my experience that if you say something back, then you will end up seeing them on every aisle and it will ruin your shopping experience.

Till next time,

  1. Yes I sure have and I always say something. It must be how I say it because so far everyone has apologized to me.

  2. I hate when that happens. What I can’t stand is the people who stop and park their cart in the middle of the aisle so that no one can get by, they are usually talking to another shopper who has also stopper her cart. I really hate grocery shopping. And don’t even get me started on the carts!

  3. Oh I hate it when folks act like that! I always say Sorry, but it seems most of the time folks just grunt and glare. :(

  4. I’ve been really lucky, I guess. I have not encountered that type of rudeness as of yet.

  5. Alright, you opened a can of worms with this one because I am still MAD MAD MAD! Old people I tell you. My son was going through the I want mommy and daddy together or I will scream for the other one stage. Some nasty old lady walked up to him while I was looking at the rice and told him “your father abandoned you!” I was almost on the news for beating the stuffing out of some old bag!

Phew. thank you for the free therapy. lol

  6. I cannot relate to that situation yet, but the stopped carts in the middle of the aisle coz two shoppers where chit chatting as if there’s no tomorrow, well..that kind of annoys me. But, well, what I say?? I would say excuse me and I push their carts to the side. Was that a bad action from me? or I am just trying to imply that they are blocking the aisle, and I need to get soap on the very top shelf, hehehe!

Have a great day.. Visit me sometimes..

  7. Yes, I think this happens to everyone. You really just have to grin and bear it. What else can you do except hope that I don’t turn out to be that way one day.

  8. Oops. Sorry I blocked the aisle. But if I don’t park in the middle my kid will grab something off the shelf. Sorry.

  9. Yes….yes…yes….I always look at grocery store mentality as just that. It is a mentality people get into either because they hate doing it, have a low budget or someone has already got on their last nerve before you ran into them. My biggest pet peeve is when they decide to stop and socialize blocking off the entire isle. To me they are totally inconsiderate because anyone that shops knows the aisle space is limited.
So I breathe a lot and work on my patience :)

  10. I’m that grumpy guy! Just kidding.
It hasn’t happened to me only because I know what my daughter likes and I know what I like, so I just grab it and get going. Both types of cereals are generic so there’s never any coupons available. :(

  11. Living in China has hardened me when shopping. This place is so busy there’s no room for manners, and none are given.

I just push in or push their cart out of the way now! I had something about this a while ago on my blog strangely enough.

  12. Jen @ Well said such peoples are really hard to manage.

  13. I just don’t think people sometime realize how they are coming across when they act like that at the grocery store. Everyone gets in a hurry, especially at the grocery store. Most of the time people just want to run in and run out. They don’t realize or often don’t care that others are trying to get the best “deal” for their buck.

  14. Having lived in Europe I actually appreciate the space and lack of crowds in a US supermarket. Try having to squeeze sideways down an aisle, then reach over somebody just to get something, never mind being able to read labels.

  15. I’m not sure that I would like having to reach over someone like that. I guess you would get used to it after a while. Sometimes we don’t realize how lucky we’ve got it here!
