There’s Junk In The Trunk

junk trunk

We are always looking for ways to cut expenses. One way we just cut a monthly expense was to sell some restaurant equipment that we had in a rented storage unit and close out the storage unit.  We have a storage shed at our house and decided we weren’t going to keep the unit just to store the smaller “stuff”. We tried to go through the boxes at the rented unit but it just got to be a bit much. What we did go through ended up going to the trash dumpster. Now there are several boxes in my hubby’s trunk and it’s been there for about three weeks. I’m pretty sure that most of the “stuff” is really “junk.” Not knowing if it is just “stuff” or “junk” has made me start thinking about how we are going to make the distinction between the two. I’ve come up with a list of three criteria we are going to use.

1. Can we use it?

2. Can we resale it?

3. If it’s paperwork, do we need to keep it?

There is a mix of all of the above and then there is a mix of items that don’t fit in any category. The “junk” that does not fit in any category is going to get bagged up and taken to the dump. The paperwork from our old restaurant is going to get put into a plastic container and labeled with the date of the restaurant’s closing and projected shred date and then it’s going to be put in the back of the storage shed. The stuff that we can actually use will get cleaned up and put into a yard sale.

Do you have “junk” or “stuff” that you need to go through and get rid of? How are you going to determine if it’s junk? Leave us a comment we’d love to hear from you.

Till next time,

  1. Ten months ago, in massive budget cuts the mayor made to the Dept of Public Health, I lost my 21 year job as a forensic nurse with the city – at the age of 64 ( the most senior nurse to be eliminated ). With a mobility disability, I could not move to open position in the ER, OR or coronary care. After two months of not working at all and exhausting all my savings ( rent on my home in the San Francisco area is $2325/mo ), I exhausted my entire remaining savings ( it’s been a rough two years ) and finally retired. With social security and my pension, my income is $90,000 less than my last working year! My life has radically changed. While I am hoping to do some legal consulting, nothing has appeared on the horizon to date. I am definitely going to have to move and downsize.

  2. No junk in my trunk, all was left behind when I became an expat! Good article for partriates though! Take Care.

  3. We’re doing the same thing… Ebay has become our friends. And as they say, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. It should say “woman”, right? I think in today’s economy, we are all tight and if selling stuff we haven’t used in a long time, well… it makes sense. Plus, we get rid of some of the clutter that collects way too easy. Good article.

That’s a good idea t generate a little bit of extra income which can definitely be put to good use paying off bills and other expenses. I too sell some items on ebay and other auction websites, it’s a good way to clear some spare space too.
