Our West Texas Snow Storm

This is what we woke up to this morning!  This is actually my shrub that is in my front yard.  We are 150 miles from Mexico and we have snow! We haven’t heard an “Official” snow measurement but in our yard it looks like we got about 5 inches.  It has stopped but it looks like it could start again at any minute.

Four things we did to get prepared for this “winter storm”!

1.  Get your groceries  before the snow fall actually starts! The Frugal Hubby went to the grocery store for us yesterday.  We had already made out our list and I was going to go after work, but we weren’t sure when the snow was going to arrive here so the Frugal Hubby decided he needed to go ahead and go early.    Also, he got a big bag of cat food for the cats just in case we were going to be snowed in for a while.

2.  Take care of any business that you may need to take care of before the storm actually hits! Thankfully we use online banking and bill paying so that was easily done.

3.  Get rock salt to put on the deck, porch, and steps. We have several steps going off our porch and deck.  One time several years ago, we used kitty litter on a patch of ice.  Good idea at the time… not a good idea after the ice melted.  It was a mess!  This time we decided to try rock salt.  We didn’t actually put it down this time because I went ahead and took a day of vacation so we haven’t had to go out anywhere.  But its the same principle as what the put on the roads…it’ll help melt the ice and snow where you have to walk.

4.  Make sure your outside animals have a warm place to get out of the weather. I have a couple of outside cats that I feed.  I can’t bring them in.  They barely let me touch them.   Normally they sleep under my deck but it just wasn’t very warm so I opened up my shed and let them go in there.  I had some old, old clothes that I put in some boxes.  They went in there and got out of the weather and hopefully cuddled up in the clothes.

I have to show you a picture of my indoor/outdoor cat.  She had only seen snow one other time — in November when we got a dusting. She decided she needed to go outside to take care of her business…she’s good that way…doesn’t like the kitty litter box but will use it if necessary…she goes to the door like a dog would do to let us know when she has to do her business.  Little did she know what was going on with the weather!  This was taken before the heavier snow started falling!

The good thing about this snow storm — the temperature is supposed to be back up to 54 degrees tomorrow and our snow will be gone!

Till next time,

We’ve had more than enough snow this winter. My perspective is less then rosy because it all started the day we tried to move house!

I live in central New York. Those pictures look like our area in July :-)
