It Couldn’t Happen Twice in a Lifetime, Could It?

It couldn’t happen twice in a lifetime, could it?  I really didn’t think so.  I thought I had learned my lesson the first time.  But it happened again!   This time it didn’t kill it…. at least I don’t think it did!

My Blackberry in Rice

Yep!  That’s my Blackberry in a bowl of white rice drying out!  I did it again….I dropped a cell phone in liquid! The first time was several years ago.  I had an open cup of coffee in my drink tray of my car and my cell phone was laying on top of the arm rest.  I put the brakes on fast and the phone slid into the open cup of coffee.  The beautiful blue light on my brand new cell phone immediately went out.

This time I had put my phone on a book on the table beside my chair. I had a glass of Pepsi that was only about a third of the way full.  For whatever reason, I decided to pick up the book and not pick up the phone.  The phone slid right into the glass of Pepsi.  It was only in the glass for a second and went in screen first.  But guess what…it was still working when I got it out of the glass!  So I went online to find out if it was a hopeless cause.  There is hope for my Blackberry!

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE A TOTAL IGMO AND DROP YOUR BLACKBERRY INTO A GLASS OF LIQUID.  (THESE TIPS ARE NOT GUARANTEED TO WORK!!!  THE FRUGAL HOUSEWIFE IS NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU TRY THEM AND THEY DON’T WORK!!!)

DO NOT USE A HAIR DRYER ON YOUR CELL PHONE TO DRY IT OUT!  IT ONLY PUSHES THE LIQUID INTO THE CIRCUITS!

1.  Dry off the outside of the phone.

2.  Take out the battery.

3.  Lay the phone with the front side up on a towel for about 10 minutes.

4.  Gently dab the inside of the phone with a dry cloth.

5.  Put your phone front side up in a bowl of uncooked white rice for 24 to 48 hours.    The white rice is supposed to draw out any moisture that may be still be in the phone.

It would have been better if it had just been water. There is a chance that the sticky from the Pepsi might do some damage.  So far the phone has worked every time that I have fired it back up to get a number out of it.  There were instructions on a website to take the phone totally apart.  But one of the tips was to be very confident in yourself and your abilities if you attempted this.  Don’t think I’m going to try that!

I really didn’t think it could happen again! Not twice in one lifetime!  But after reading some of the Blackberry forums, it happens multiple times to the same people over and over.  And I guess I could look at the bright side — it’s given me another topic for a post tomorrow!  Check back tomorrow for the pros and cons of taking the insurance on cell phones!  Yes — I did take the insurance out on the phone — I wasn’t a total IGMO!

Till next time,

ow… i didn’t know that putting it in a bowl of uncooked rice will do the trick. well, better be careful. hope there won’t be a third time for this.

That is funny. Now that it is on it’s way to recovery. My grandson is always damaging his. He likes to drop it. I looked at it one time and wondered how he could still use it. Oh well that is life.

  3. Jen says:

I’ve put my cell phone through the washing machine, and dryer and it worked after about a day of drying out, for about a week. I haven’t yet dropped it into a class of liquid but I drink out of cans or travel mugs so that isn’t likely to happen. I can’t wait to hear it this worked. Cell phones are so expensive but we all do things like this and it’s nice to know there is a fix.

  4. It’s not looking too good for the phone. The sticky from the drink has stuck the circuits. We’re going to Sprint to see if they can clean the “gunk” or if it will need replacing.

  5. It’s recovery was short lived. Too much sticky Pepsi.

  6. It seems that it won’t work on Pepsi. The forums and posts warned that it probably wouldn’t and it isn’t guaranteed on phones dropped in water. Technology has got better…it didn’t die instantly like the first phone. I had heard that they were starting to waterproof the insides of cellphones — maybe someday they’ll Pepsi-proof them! LOL!

  7. Alison says:

I dropped my phone into a sink full of water while doing dishes, or I was just done and… or something!
