Review of Kraft Homestyle Hearty Four Cheese Macaroni & Cheese

Kraft Homestyle Hearty Four Cheese Macaroni & Cheese

Last week, The Frugal Housewife got one of the best packages delivered to the Frugal House  – 3 packages of the different flavors of the new Kraft Homestyle Macaroni and Cheese. A few weeks ago we were contacted by a representative of Kraft Foods and asked if we’d like to try them and write a review,  so naturally we said “OF COURSE!!!”

A couple of nights ago, I made the Homestyle Hearty Four Cheese Macaroni and Cheese. The Frugal Hubby reminds me a little of the kids that they have in the commercials that are so dedicated to the old style of Mac & Cheese.  He wasn’t sure how he’d like the breadcrumbs on the top but I convinced him to at least try a little first before he made his mind up that he didn’t like it.  I saved a little on the end of the dish without the breadcrumbs just in case.

Besides the macaroni in the bag, there are also 3 packages of ingredients — the seasoning mix, the cheese, and the breadcrumbs. There are four steps to making the dish and you can use the same pan for three of the four steps.

This is a picture of the beginning of the third step. The macaroni was in the colander draining.  The beginning of this step is very much like making a rue for gravy.  Once the seasoning and the milk start to thicken you add the cheese.  It doesn’t take very long for it to thicken. It was actual cheese and not POWDERED!!!  Next time I’ll be sure to have the sauce open before I start the step.

It doesn’t take very long to melt the cheese down.  The clumps did melt and blend.

Here it is all mixed together!!!  Looks pretty good without the breadcrumbs!!!

And now for the final in the baking dish with the breadcrumbs!!!  I browned it just a bit.

Mac & Cheese in Dish

The Frugal Hubby has now decided that he likes Mac & Cheese with the breadcrumbs and that this was a keeper!

He wouldn’t let me take a picture of him “pigging” out on it.  I can’t wait to try the other flavors.

As always with reviews, I have to disclose that I was provided the item for review.

The opinions written and expressed are just that — opinions of The Frugal Housewife.

The pictures were actual pictures taken by me (with the exception of the first one and it was provided to me).

The results of the product may vary from cook to cook so if it doesn’t turn out the way mine looks –

I’m sorry but don’t blame me.

Have you tried the new Kraft Hearty Four Cheese Macaroni & Cheese yet?  If you have, please leave us a comment and let us know how you liked it and if you thought it was easy to cook!

Till next time,

JT Locke

  1. How was it compared to Stouffer’s mac & cheese? I saw the commercial for it the other day, and that was my first thought, as I compare all mac & cheese to that kind. I could live on the Stouffer’s stuff. I’d weigh 300 lbs, and I’d be going through Lactaid like candy, but at least I’d be happily full. If it’s at least as good as that, I might have to pick some up.

  2. I’m not really sure. I’ll have to pick up some of the Stouffer’s mac & cheese. The Kraft was cheesy and it did taste good. The Frugal Hubby said right away that it tasted different from the boxed Kraft with the powdered cheese.

  3. Melanie says:

We just bought some of the new Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, but I haven’t made it yet. Thanks for the review! From what I have read, I think my kids will love it! My husband is very picky though, so I will keep my fingers crossed with him! (-:

  4. Camden says:

Did you try any of the other flavors? If so, which did you prefer? I haven’t actually seen this product in the stores…I’ll have to keep an eye out for it.

  5. Kimberly says:

Let me start off by saying I am a fan of mac&cheese and kraft, was excited to try the new homestyle mac&cheese. Being a personal chef my self and after working all day any thing that helps me save time and is fast and easy is a plus. It was easy to make and looked good, but the taste was off, almost like a metal after taste. I thought maybe it was me but my whole family had the same reaction. I found your page when I google it to see if anyone else has had the same outcome? Once again I use many kraft products and very disappointed in this one.
