Do You Have Dirty Cans?

5 November 2009 6 Comments

With all the flu, both regular and H1N1, that is going around these days, it is very important to SANITIZE everything! One thing that we don’t always think about is the canned goods that we use when cooking.  It is very important to wipe off the can and the top of the can, including the rim, with a disinfectant wipe.

Think about it and I don’t want to gross anyone out but … there are times when you open the can of food and the lid drops down into the food. What would happen if you didn’t wipe off the can and the lid?  Your food would possibly get contaminated by whatever germs that the stockperson had.  Not a very pretty site!  But one that everyone needs to start thinking about!

I’m stocking up on several containers of wipes!

Till next time,

I always wash our canned goods with soap and water and I wipe them dry with a clean cloth before opening.I don’t use a disinfectant wipe for fear of chemicals going into the food. You’re right, the cans could be contaminated with germs and mind you, there could be rodents’ and roaches’ poop on them.Better be wary than careless.

Good reminder! I use soap and water on my cans, because I am indeed grossed out by the thought of the bacteria-laden lid dropping down and contaminating everything.

This is a good reminder. I always wash our canned goods before opening it. It’s better to be sure, you don’t know what things or insects have crawled on it. Even for soft drinks in can, wipe or much better to wash it.

That’s a great tip. I honestly didn’t think about that.
