You know I used to hate going into the kitchen! Sometimes it seemed like the smoke detector could see me coming and start going off! The high pitched beep that would just keep going no matter what we would do to shut it off was so annoying! It would have been nice to have the detectors stop beeping when I yelled “I’m cooking”! I’ll have to admit there were times my husband would have to take out the batteries just to make it shut up but he’d always put them back after the smoke cleared.
Thank goodness my cooking has come a long way from those early days of cooking. So now when the smoke detectors go off we know there is a potential problem. Our smoke detectors are hard wired smoke detectors with a battery backup. The batteries still have to be changed every so often because they do go bad and would not work if there was a fire when the electricity is off.
When this picture of the smoke detector popped up on my Facebook news feed, it made me start thinking about the last time we changed our batteries in our two smoke detectors. I couldn’t remember exactly when we had changed them. Turns out my husband changed them the last time the time changed.
I figure if I had questions about our smoke detectors then you probably would have questions about your smoke detectors too! So I searched the internet and found a really good article on the Allstate Blog that answered a lot of my questions!
It suggests testing your smoke detectors at least twice a month. Now you may think that if you tend to make a lot of smoke when you cook then you’ve got that covered! Well you don’t! The smoke detector should be tested by pushing the button on the unit. Plus –you should also have someone at the furthest point of your house from the smoke detector to make sure they can actually hear the beep.
