First, let me say this. Newspaper and printable coupons are still around although they are not as popular as they once were. There was a time when you could find several hundred dollars worth of coupons on the Coupons.com site. That’s no longer the case.
Gradually, digital apps have become more and more popular. As time goes on, stores no longer want to accept printable coupons.

The Sunday Newspaper
This is one of the first places I tell people to look when they are beginning to coupon. The most common inserts in the Sunday newspaper are:
- Retail Me Not
- SmartSource (SS)
- Proctor & Gamble (PG)
The coupon inserts are put out each week on a coupon schedule. Some weeks the newspaper will only carry a SmartSource insert or maybe two depending on your area. Other week’s it may only carry a Retail Me Not insert.
You can find the coupons usually in the middle of the newspaper with the sales circulars and Parade Magazine. Make sure you look through the newspaper thoroughly. I usually look through it before I buy the newspaper.
Tips to help you to be successful in finding coupons in the Sunday newspaper
- Check the Coupon Schedule to see what coupons are being offered in the newspaper each week.
- Before you purchase the newspaper, check it to make sure the inserts are in the newspaper.
- Ask your family, neighbors, and friends if they are going to use the coupons in their Sunday newspaper.
- Check the local restaurants to see if someone left the paper with the coupons on the table. Ask the manager to see if you can have them.
- Don’t forget to look in the Parade magazine. There are sometimes coupons in them.

The Grocery Store
Occasionally you can find coupons in the weekly grocery store ad. Your grocery store may even have a bulletin board where they put all the coupons that they are offering that week. The grocery store chain, HEB in the state of Texas has a board where they put all the yellow tag coupons they are offering that week. Plus, they also put the hangtags on the shelves where the products are located.
Also, check the grocery store website. Most grocery stores now offer printable coupons or clipless coupons on their websites. Clipless coupons load directly to your loyalty card or account that you set up on their site. To use the coupons, you usually just have to type in your telephone number on the keypad and the coupons will be deducted from your total.
Direct from the Product Manufacturer
Most product manufacturer’s offer coupons when you sign up for their mailing lists.
Kellogg’s Family Rewards is one. Sign up for the Kellogg’s Family Rewards and receive the latest and greatest benefits from Kellogg, like exclusive savings, great-tasting recipes, and special offers and promotions.
Visit each product manufacturer’s website and sign up for their mailing lists.
TIP: Create an email address just for the newsletters from the companies. Sometimes it can get a bit spammy with all the email that you will get from the companies.
Magazines
Several years ago, it was common practice to place coupons throughout the magazines. Over the years, the amount of coupons in magazines has been declining but occasionally you can still find them.
On the Products
Peelies
Do a quick scan of the products that you are buying as you pick them up off the shelf. Sometimes there are coupons that are on the outside of the package.
Most of the time these coupons can only be redeemed at the time of purchase. Be sure to read the coupon carefully because sometimes there is wording that says the “Cashier must remove”. Remind them as they are scanning it to take the coupon off so that you get your savings on the product.
Hangtags
These are also sometimes known as “wine tags” because you will occasionally find them around the necks of the wine bottles.
Hangtags can generally be redeemed at any time. Please use coupon etiquette– Do NOT take all of the hangtags off the products unless you are actually going to buy the product when you find the coupons.
Inside the Package or Under the Label
Manufacturer’s sometimes put coupons inside the boxes or under the labels on jars. Be sure to check the packages thoroughly before you toss them in the recycle bin or trash.
Phone Apps
Most stores offer a phone app where you can “clip” the coupon. Dollar General, Target Cartwheel, HEB, Kroger — the list could go on all have this available on their apps.
Phone Apps are becoming the norm as printable coupons are gradually fading into the sunset.
Rebate Offers
If clipping coupons or signing up for a phone app account is not your thing, you can still save money on your products. Download the rebate apps, make your purchases, and upload the receipt to your account.
